Photo Uploading Requirements

The NY State Photo Manager requires users to have Java installed and enabled for their internet browser.  JavaScript must also be enabled.  Please note that Java and Javascript are two separate and independent programming languages. Having one enabled does NOT imply the other is enabled.

There is a simple test to determine if Java is installed. Visit http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and click "Verify Java Version".

If you do not have Java installed on your computer, visit http://www.java.com/en/download to download it.

  • Question: How do I tell if the photo manager is loading correctly?
    Answer: The photo uploader looks like the image below.  It may take a few seconds for it to load.    Photo Uploader

  • Question: What are the correct steps for uploading photos once I see the Photo Uploader?
    Answer:     First, click the "Add" button to add photos to your queue.  Once all photos you want uploaded are in your queue, click the "Upload" button to begin the upload.  Note that you may be restricted on the number of photos you can upload depending on the page (for example, you can only upload one profile photo).

  • Question: How do I tell if I have Java installed?
    Answer:     Visit http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and click "Verify Java Version".  If you do not have Java installed on your computer, visit http://www.java.com/en/download to download it.

  • Question: How do I tell if I have Javascript enabled?
    Answer:     See the section below titled "How to enable Javascript in select browsers".

  • Question: I just uploaded new photos to replace some old photos, but they aren't showing up, why?
    Answer:     Your browser may still have the old photos in it's cache. Try forcing a browser refresh to see the new photos.

  • Question: I am able to add photos to the uploader with the "Add" button, but when I click the "Upload" button I get an "Error Status Code 500" message.
    Answer: The most common reason for this issue is there was an interuption in your network connection and the file did not upload successfully.  However, if you always get an error 500 when trying to upload photos, please contact us to help resolve this issue    .

  • Question: How do I view my images as thumbnails when adding them to the upload box.
    Answer: At this time, the current version of the uploader does not have this option. As a workaround, the uploader does support drag and drop.  If you open your file manager window (for example, Windows Explorer) and then go to the folder where your photos reside, select View as thumbnails from the appropriate menu, then drag the photos you want into the photo manager.
     
  • Question: I am getting a security warning when I go to upload photos.
    Answer:  The first time you upload photos with the most current Photo Uploader, you may get a security warning confirming that you want to run the applet.  You can avoid this warning by checking the "Always trust content from this publisher" and then click "Run".  This warning also sometimes happens when the certificate is confirmed but has expired.  For the exact security warning, see this screenshot which also tells you exactly what to do.
     

How to enable Javascript in select browsers

Internet Explorer

  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
  2. Click the Internet zone.
  3. If you do not have to customize your Internet security settings, click Default Level. Then do step 4
  4. Click the Back button to return to the previous page, and then click the Refresh button to run scripts.

(This applies to all versions except Pocket Internet Explorer) Note: To allow scripting on this Web site only, and to leave scripting disabled in the Internet zone, add this Web site to the Trusted sites zone.

If you have to customize your Internet security settings, follow these steps:
a. Click Custom Level.
b. In the Security Settings – Internet Zone dialog box, click Enable for Active Scripting in the Scripting section.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Content tab, click to select the Enable JavaScript check box.
  3. Click the Go back one page button to return to the previous page, and then click the Reload current page button to run scripts.

Apple Safari

  1. Open Safari
  2. On the Safari menu, click on Preferences.
  3. Click the Security icon.
  4. Click on Enable JavaScript next to the Web Content section if it is not checked.
  5. Close the Preferences window.
  6. Close and restart Safari.

Opera

  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.
  2. On the Advanced tab, click Content.
  3. Click to select the Enable JavaScript check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click the Back button to return to the previous page, and then click the Reload button to run scripts.

Netscape

  1. Select Edit, Preferences,Advanced
  2. Click to select Enable JavaScript option.

Google Chrome

  1. Javascript is enabled by default
