Desolation Wilderness. This 963 acre tract (virtually an island) is part of the Albemarle Sound, a 50-mile long by 14-25 mile wide fresh/brackish estuary fed by the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers flowing to the Atlantic Ocean and protected by the Outer Banks at Currituck (Think Kitty Hawk). The Atlantic Coast Intracoastal Waterway enters the sound from the south through the Great Dismal Swamp which provides alternatives to experience Historic Plymouth (this property) at the extreme western end of the sound and Elizabeth City, Edenton, and other historical towns along it's boundary. The Albemarle Sound is one of the two sounds on the east coast flyway known as waterfowl capital of the world. Washington County is also considered the Black Bear Capital of the world with hunters coming from around the world to harvest bears many over 700 lbs. It is also a world fishing destination with freshwater species including massive striped bass, Largemouth Bass, Red Drum, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Perch, and many other rare species. It is thought to be the only place in the world that still has a viable population of the Short-nose Gar. (All of the attesting to the incredibly good water quality created by the massive fresh water inflow mixed with the salty ocean water mixing). Because the sound is fresh, salt, or brackish depending on stream flow and wind, it is a one place in the world smorgasbord of fish species. The sound also access the NC Outer Banks... a world renowned large gamefish attraction as the Atlantic Gulfstream is closest to land here than anywhere else along the Eastern Seaboard. This Island is home to a massive Black Bear, Deer, and Turkey populations unmatched on the Eastern Seaboard. Freshwater, Saltwater, Bear, Deer, Turkey, Alligator, Racoon, Fox, . Midway on the Eastern Seaboard, the climate supports an incredible diversity of wildlife.
